Dr. Derek Bock grew up on the south coast of Massachusetts, near Cape Cod. He remained on the East Coast for his undergraduate studies at Stonehill College, just south of Boston.
After receiving his Bachelor of Science as a double major in biology and chemistry from Stonehill, Dr. Derek continued his studies at the prestigious Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston. While at Tufts, Dr. Derek not only remained ranked at the top of his graduating class, but achieved honors in both parts of his National Dental Board exams. Aside from the numerous awards and distinctions that were bestowed upon him, it was at Tufts that he met Dr. Anokhi (they were classmates!). They both received Doctorates of Dental Medicine from Tufts University in May 2003.
Following his dental school graduation, Dr. Derek moved to the Midwest to complete his post-graduate training in orthodontics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He completed a three-year residency in orthodontics and obtained his Master of Science in oral sciences. In addition to his residency, Dr. Derek also completed a one-year fellowship in craniofacial orthodontics at the University of Illinois Craniofacial Center.
It was during this fellowship that Dr. Derek received additional training in dealing with orthodontic problems as they relate to children with craniofacial syndromes, especially cleft lip/palate. He also co-authored an article that was featured in the Journal of Craniofacial Surgery: “Natal teeth: a potential impediment to nasoalveolar molding in infants with cleft lip and palate.” J Craniofac Surg. 2005 Mar; 16(2):262-6.
Dr. Derek’s scholarly interests include advanced concepts of smile design as they relate to facial balance and harmony. He has done extensive research into the width of the smile as it relates to facial harmony. He has an article pending publication, entitled “The Perception of Buccal Corridors in Smile Esthetics.”
During his free time, Dr. Derek is an avid golfer. He also loves running and cycling, and competes in triathlons. Dr. Derek is an accomplished guitar player, and believes that creating music should be a fundamental activity in which every child should have the opportunity to participate. He and his wife, Dr. Anokhi, enjoy outdoor activities with their daughters Bela, Asha, and Lila, their son Keegan, and their Chocolate Lab, Cooper.
